I wanted to discuss a serious issue with you today. The Halifax Regional Police have begun their new campaign called Distractions Kill. The focus of the campaign is to bring awareness to the rising issue of pedestrian/motor vehicle accidents in our area. This issue is one that I take very seriously as I was struck by a car last year while trying to cross the street in the middle of the day. For whatever reason, I was not seen in the crosswalk and the situation could have ended in a much more tragic manner then it had.
Now I am not saying that it is always the drivers fault. There are many times when people do not “look both ways” before crossing the street to see if there is any oncoming traffic. And this may be due to the fact that we are distracted by our phones, iPods and such. And for all you drivers out there; there is a reason there is a speed limit and if you stick to it, it may give you more time to stop or slow down in case of an impending accident that could be avoided.
I urge that you all put away your phones, don’t play with the radio, keep the distractions to a minimum and be careful. There is no reason for you to be the cause of a tragic accident or on the reciprocating end of it. In the very least it could save you from a long and expensive lawsuit.
